Moving from Band 6 to Band 7 in IELTS General Training requires focused improvements, especially in how clearly, accurately, and fluently you use English across all four modules. Here are practical tips for each section:
General Strategy First
What’s the difference between Bancs 6 and 7?
Band 6 = “Competent user” (some errors, limited complexity, occasional misunderstandings)
Band 7 = “Good user” (occasional errors, mostly complex language used well, good understanding)

So, to go from 6 to 7, you must:
Reduce grammar and vocabulary errors
Use more complex structures and varied language
Improve task response and coherence.
1. Reading (Target:30-32 correct out of 40 for band 7)Tips:
Skim first, scan later: Skim the passage to understand the main idea. Then scan for specific answers.
Watch for synonyms/paraphrasing in the questions and text.
Practice True/False/Not Given and Matching Headings — they’re the trickiest.
Time yourself: 60 minutes, no extra time for transfer.
2. Writing (Aim for Task 1 & 2 score of 7+)Tips:
Task 1 (Letter writing)
Know the tone (formal, semi-formal, informal)
Use a clear structure: Opening → Purpose → Details → Ending
Use linkers (Firstly, Furthermore, I would appreciate it if…)
Task 2 (Essay Writing)Tips:
Stick to 4 paragraphs: Introduction → 2 Body → Conclusion
Use clear topic sentences and supporting examples
Use a mix of sentence structures (complex, conditional, passive)
Avoid repetition; use synonyms.
Check grammar and spelling.
Practice Tip: Write an essay daily, and get it marked by a teacher or tutor.
3. Listening (Target: 30-32 correct answers for Band 7)
Tips:
Practice prediction skills — read questions before the recording starts.
Listen for keywords and paraphrases.
Focus during Section 3 & 4 — they are harder.
Improve spelling — wrong spelling = wrong answer.
Practice using: BBC podcasts or TED Talks for natural listening
4. Speaking (Key: Fluency, Grammar, Vocabulary, Pronunciation)
Tips:
Practice speaking on common topics (e.g. travel, family, food, goals)
Use linking phrases: “To be honest…” “As far as I’m concerned…” “In my opinion…”
Use a range of tenses: past, present, future
Don’t memorize answers — sound natural and confident
Record yourself and notice errors in fluency or grammar
BONUS: Focus more on accuracy than just speed
Get feedback on your writing and speaking
Learn from model answers — but never copy them word-for-word
